Mid-fifteenth-century
A creature with a rounded face, defined cheek bones and detailed eyes showing piercing pupils. Large foilate forms can be seen emerging from the sides of its mouth which then surround the head.
The exaggeration of the eyes give the impression of something always watching from above.This boss could be a depiction of a demon to warn the medieval viewer against transgressive behaviour.
The ceiling in the chancel was repainted in 1862, and again in the late 1930s.
